Evangelism – oh so hard!

If there is one thing that many Christians in the West will admit to is how difficult it is to share Christ with family, friends, and strangers. This difficulty usually isn’t due to the fact that they try and are rejected, but usually its rooted in fear and discomfort.

But how do you overcome those elements that are so debilitating?

Over the next few posts I want to give you some of my thoughts on how to overcome fear and discomfort in order to be able to get into conversations about Christ with anyone that will give you their time. Maybe this will help you as you develop the courage to step out of your comfort zone and preach Christ.

In this post I want to deal with the obvious, if you are a Christian, you are called to preach Christ. You are called to Evangelism. That is part of what it means to be a Christian, one who represents Christ. And we do this not just with acts of kindness, but with the Words of Christ.

In Luke 24:44-48 Christ establishes our mission:

Now He said to them, “These are My words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things which are written about Me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.” Then He opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, and He said to them, “Thus it is written, that the Christ would suffer and rise again from the dead the third day, and that repentance for forgiveness of sins would be proclaimed in His name to all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem. You are witnesses of these things. And behold, I am sending forth the promise of My Father upon you; but you are to stay in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”

And the Apostle Paul stated in Romans 10:14-17

How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard? And how will they hear without a preacher? How will they preach unless they are sent? Just as it is written, “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news of good things!”However, they did not all heed the good news; for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.

The first thing we need to understand is that Jesus has given the Church a mission, and that mission is to take the Good News of His coming, dying, and resurrection for the forgiveness of sins for all who would believe, to the world. When God saved you, He intended to use you in a small way to bring that about, right where you are at, for He knows where you will be in the future.

So child of God, buckle up and let’s dig in over the next few post so that we can be emboldened to fulfill this Great Commission.
